Vijay Mallya buys Gandhi items for $1.8 million. Liquor baron Vijay Mallya paid 1.8 million dollars at an auction to bring Mahatma Gandhi’s belongings back to Inida. Mallya also announced that he will donate the items including Gandhi’s eyeglasses, a pocket watch and a bowl to the government of India.
Earlier, the sale of the items went ahead despite the seller trying to withdraw at the last minute. Indian government had also protested against the sale of the items, saying they should be returned to the nation and not sold off to the highest bidder.
Toni Bedi, an executive of the UB Group company, had the wining bid after a furious four minutes in which the offers raced upward from 10,000 dollars to 1.8 million dollars. Bedi said he was acting on instructions of Vijay Mallya, the liquor baron of India and also the owner of Kingfisher Airlines. He said Mallya plans to return the Gandhi items to India for public display in New Delhi.
