Veteran Journalist Kuldip Nayar no more: Passes away at 95 in Delhi

August 23, 2018: Renowned veteran journalist, author and human rights activist Kuldip Nayar passed away on Wednesday night in a Delhi hospital. He was 95-year-old.

Born in Sialkot of Pakistan on 14 August 1923, Nayar started his career in Urdu journalism and worked in The Statesman as editor. He was arrested during the Emergency imposed by ex-prime minister Indira Gandhi.
His column 'Between the Lines' has been famous and more than 80 newspapers including Deccan Herald carry it. Nayar is known for his stand on peace and human rights.
In 2015, he was honoured with ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his contribution to journalism at the eighth edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence awards. Nayar also served as High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom in 1990 and as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1997.
Nayar is also the author of 15 books, including Distant Neighbours: A Tale of the Subcontinent, India after Nehru, among others.
Expressing his condolence on the death of Nayar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a man who was "frank and fearless" in his views. PM Modi said Nayar was an intellectual giant of our times, "Frank and fearless in his views, his work spanned across many decades. His strong stand against the Emergency, public service and commitment to a better India will always be remembered. Saddened by his demise. My condolences.”
His last rites will be held on Thursday at 1 pm at Lodhi crematorium in Delhi.
