Vajpayee breathe his last in AIIMS hospital where he was on life support. He had been admitted in the hospital since June 11 with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.
In its press release AIIMS stated that, Vajpayee’s condition had deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems. Despite the best of efforts they lost him. He passed away at 05:05 PM.
As per reports, his mortal remains will be taken to the BJP office tomorrow, where the public can pay homage, followed by cremation before sun sets, most likely at Ekta Sthal. Army officials have confirmed that gun carriage is ready for the former Prime Minister's mortal remains.
It may be mentioned that Vajpayee first entered Parliament in 1957 and soon earned fame for his oratory. He first became prime minister in 1996 but resigned 13 days later as the BJP did not have a majority in Parliament. He had served as the Prime Minister of India between 1996 and 2004 in three non-consecutive terms.
He had conducted nuclear tests in 1998, but also took steps to boost ties with Pakistan.
In December 2005, Vajpayee announced his retirement from active politics, declaring that he would not contest in the next general election.
He was conferred India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India in 2014. It was declared by the Modi government in 2014 that Vajpayee's birthday, 25 December, would be marked as Good Governance Day.
The entire country is mourning at the loss of such an iconic leader.
