August 8, 2018: The Madras high court will on Wednesday resume hearing on a DMK petition to allow party leader M Karunanidhi to be buried at Chennai’s Marina Beach after Tamil Nadu’s AIADMK government refused permission.

The DMK had filed an urgent petition before a two-judge bench comprising acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice SS Sundar asking for a burial place on the Marina beach, where founder party CN Annadurai and AIADMK leaders MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa are buried.

The high court met at Ramesh’s official residence at 10.30pm and heard arguments by Tamil Nadu’s lawyer C S Vaidyanathan and DMK lawyer P Wilson.

The court directed the state government and the Chennai Corporation to file their replies and adjourned the case to Wednesday morning 8 am.

The state government had declined DMK’s request by citing rules of the Coastal Regulation Zone Act, saying two acres land would be allotted for Karunanidhi’s burial near Gandhi Mandapam on Sardar Patel Road.

DMK workers held protests and shouted slogans demanding a place for Karunanidhi’s burial at Marina beach. Opposition parties backed DMK’s demand.

“Like Jayalalitha ji, Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) was an expression of the voice of the Tamil people. That voice deserves to be given space on Marina Beach. I am sure the current leaders of Tamil Nadu will be magnanimous in this time of grief,” said Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Twitter.

Actor-politician Rajinikanth urged the state government to “take all efforts” to lay to rest Karunanidhi near the Annadurai Memorial on Marina. “That is the due respect we would be giving to that great man,” he said in a tweet.

The Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and Pattali Makkal Katchi supported DMK’s demand.

Karunanidhi, who was admitted to Chennai’s Kauvery hospital on July 28 after he contracted urinary tract infection, died on Tuesday at the age of 94. The DMK patriarch, often referred to as Kalaignar, dominated the political stage of Tamil Nadu like a colossus for nearly six decades, personally undefeated in any election he contested.
