June 20, 2018: In a recent development, President Ram Nath Kovind approved Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect on Wednesday, 20 June after the BJP ended its alliance with PDP in the state on Tuesday, leading to the collapse of the three-year-old Mehbooba Mufti government.

This is the eighth time that central rule is being imposed in the sensitive state in the last four decades, and the fourth time since Vohra took charge as Governor in 2008.
Reportedly, the BJP pulled out of its alliance with the PDP, saying it has become impossible to continue in the government in view of the growing radicalism and terrorism in the state.
BJP general secretary Ram Madhav made the surprise announcement after the party high command summoned its Jammu and Kashmir ministers for emergency consultations in New Delhi. A few hours later, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti submitted her resignation to Governor NN Vohra in Srinagar.
Meanwhile, National Conference chief Omar Abdullah met Governor Vohra and said his party doesn’t have the mandate to form the government.
As per reports, on late Tuesday evening, after concluding his consultations with all the major political parties in the state, Governor Vohra forwarded his report to the President of India for imposition of governor’s rule under Section 92 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir.
It may be mentioned that the Shiv Sena lauded the BJP for walking out of the government in Jammu and Kashmir, but questioned why it took "three years and sacrifices of 600 soldiers" for the Amit Shah-led party to realize that the coalition with PDP was "useless", as per reports.
The Sena, second largest constituent of the NDA, also wondered if the BJP's decision to pull out of the state government was taken to avoid "uneasy questions" over violence against soldiers ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Whereas, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram said it was "a relief" that the "opportunistic" PDP-BJP coalition in Jammu and Kashmir collapsed on Tuesday, 19 June, and expressed hope that “the muscular, militaristic policy does not come back under the guise of Governor's Rule”.
