Meghalaya: Curfew imposed in various localities of Shillong following violence

June 1, 2018: Tension erupted in Shillong, Meghalaya on Thursday following which curfew has been imposed in various localities of the region.

As per reports, clashes triggered in the capital aftera conductor -of a state-run bus -was assaulted by locals for allegedly misbehaving with a womanin Them Aew Mawlong area, also known as Punjabi Line..
The incident led to a stand-off between the drivers and locals, which was pacified by Meghalaya police, and the youth was taken to Shillong Civil Hospital.
However, things took a dramatic turn when the conductor's co-workers returned to the spot a few hours later to avenge the beating. One thing led to another and soon there was a full-blown clash between groups armed with rods, daggers and other sharp weapons. The mob, comprising residents and state transport staff, kept growing, courtesy social media. They threw stones, petrol bombs and whatever they could lay their hands on. Several people were injured and a few vehicles were damaged.
The police had to fire in the air and use tear gas to disperse the mob. Later in the evening, the situation again flared up in Motphran when a mob attempted to march towards Them Aew Mawlong area but was prevented by the cops.
Unable to control the mob, Meghalaya police set up barricade at G S Road and prohibited entry and exit of vehicles in Motphran area. The officers had to rope in more armed police by midnight, but were unable to pacify the mob, following which the curfew (Section 144) was imposed early on Friday morning in certain localities of Shillong under East Khasi hill district.
“The curfew was promulgated at 4 am on Friday in Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Raitsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lama Villa, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hills, Cantolment and Mawlong Hat,” said Deputy Commissioner Peter S Dkhar, adding that it will continue till further orders.
As per reports, three persons have so far been arrested for the violence.
