May 22, 2018: PM Narendra Modi on Monday described Russian President Vladimir Putin as his personal friend and a person who has played a role in his political career since the early days of his Chief Ministership as the two leaders sought to strengthen their personal chemistry to widen strategic partnership to combat terrorism, stabilise Afghanistan and create multipolar world.

“Russia is India’s old-time friend. We share long-standing historical ties, and Mr President is my personal friend, and a friend of India… Russia and you specifically always played a very important role in my political career. In 2001, when I served as Chief Minister of Gujarat, I made my first visit to Russia with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. And you were the first international leader I met as Chief Minister. Moscow and you yourself marked the beginning of my career,” Modi said in his opening remarks at the landmark informal Summit with Putin at the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Both leaders expressed their concern over terrorism and radicalization, and their determination to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. In this context, they endorsed the importance of restoring peace and stability in Afghanistan in an atmosphere free from the threat of terrorism, and agreed to work together towards achieving this objective.
The two leaders held in depth discussions on major international issues and agreed that the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia is an important factor for global peace and stability. They shared the view that India and Russia have an important role to play in contributing to an open and equitable world order. In this regard, they recognized each other’s respective roles as major powers with common responsibilities for maintaining global peace and stability.
They agreed on the importance of building a multipolar world order. They decided to intensify consultation and coordination with each other, including on the Indo-Pacific Region.
Both leaders agreed to institute a Strategic Economic Dialogue between NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, to identify greater synergy in trade and investment. The two leaders welcomed the arrival of the first consignment of LNG under a long-term agreement between Gazprom and GAIL, next month.
