CBI arrested two police officers on charge of helping BJP MLA in Unnao gangrape murder case

 May 17, 2018: The CBI has arrested then Station House Officer (SHO) and Sub-Inspector (SI) Makhi Police Station on charges of helping the BJP MLA Kudeep Singh Sengar, an accused in high-profile Unnao gangrape and murder case. 

The CBI investigating the Unnao gangrape and murder case had summoned then Makhi Police Station SHO Ashok Singh Bhadauria and SI Kamta Pratap Singh on Wednesday in Lucknow for interrogation. The investigating agency grilled the two till late evening and later arrested them under Sections 120-B, 193, 201, 218 of the IPC and 3/25 of the Arms Act. 
The Inspector General (IG) CBI GN Goswami said that the agency has found substantial evidences against the arrested police officers for the helping the main accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar in his attempt to cover up the gangrape case and lodging fake FIRs against the victim’s father. Earlier, the two were suspended along with four other policemen of Makhi Police Station after the SIT probe. 
The two were involved delaying registration of the victim’s FIR and removing evidences at the behest of the BJP MLA. They had also shown fake recovery of a country-made pistol from victim’s father to send him jail.
“The arrested police officers have admitted they had helped the BJP MLA in dropping his name from the first FIR and arresting victim’s father in fake cases,” confided a CBI officer, investigating the case.
After the arrest of the two, the CBI is likely to seek their remand from the Special CBI Court for further questioning. The two might reveal the names of senior police officials who had directed them to save the BJP MLA.
Earlier, the CBI had arrested the BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his close aide Shashi Singh, his brother Atul Singh Segar and five others. The CBI is investigating the case under the Allahabad High Court monitoring. It has to submit the second status report on May 21 at the High Court. Earlier, the High Court had showed the displeasure over slow progress in agency’s investigation when it had submitted its first report on May 1.
