May 9, 2018: The 71st Cannes Film Festival will witness four National Award-winning films from Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Lakshadweep respectively, which will represent India's regional cinema prowess.

It may be stated that Assamese film "Village Rockstars", Malayalam film "Bhayanakam", Bengali film "Nagarkirtan", and "Sinjar", a film from Lakshadweep made in the Jasari language, will be showcased at the festival’s India Pavilion, organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting along with Ficci. A delegation led by Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani will push for their distribution and exhibition in the global market.
As per reports, an "India Day" will be organized at the festival on 11 May to bring together the French and Indian film industries. The Embassy of France in India and UniFrance, in charge of promoting French films abroad, will organize India Day on Friday at Terrasse UniFrance, Cannes.
It may be mentioned that the Assamese film "Village Rockstars" - written, edited, co-produced, and directed by self-taught fimmaker Rima Das – had won the National Award 2018 for best film besides winning the awards for best editing, best location sound, and best child actor.
On the other hand "Bhayanakam" bagged three awards – best director, best adapted screenplay and best cinematography – at the 65th National Film Awards.
Made in Jeseri (the dialect of Malayalam spoken in Lakshadweep) by short film director Sandeep Pampally, "Sinjar" bagged the titles of the Best Jeseri Film and the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Director at the 65th National Film Awards.
Whereas helmed by acclaimed director Kaushik Ganguly, Bengali film "Nagar Kirtan" won big at the 65th National Film Awards, with four honours to its credit – Special Jury, Best Actor, Best Costume and Best Makeup Artist.
The India Pavilion will also see the launch of T for Tajmahal, poster of Bhonsle by actor Manoj Bajpayee and producer Devashish Makhija, and actor Dhanush-starrer Indo-French co-production The Extraordinary Journey Of Fakir.
The glamorous film festival kicked off on the French Riviera from Tuesday. Scheduled to run from May 8 to 19, the highly anticipated event is expected to bring many surprises this year as a whole lot of new-gen directors are in the running for the festival’s coveted honors.
Besides the four regional films India will be represented at the prestigious film jamboree by Nandita Das’s biographical drama Manto and Rohena Gera’s Sir in the Un Certain Regard and Critics Week categories respectively.
