April 12, 2018: Amid nation-wide protests by thousands of students, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said that she has decided to abolish the quota system in government services after thousands of students marched across the country in protest against a controversial policy of setting aside jobs for special groups.

As per reports, Hasina declared in Parliament that “there is no need for quota system in the public service” asking the protesters to “Go back home” as the “quota system will be scrapped as the students do not want it”.
However she has maintained that the government will make special arrangements for jobs for minorities and people with disabilities.
The students began the protests on Sunday against discriminatory quotas for government jobs, leaving scores of people injured at the Dhaka University.
Media reports suggested the protests saw several government websites including those of the Bangabhaban presidential palace and the premier's office temporarily hacked.
The pages were replaced with a page that showed messages related to the quota reform along with a picture of the ongoing protest.
According to the students, reservation system was discriminatory as 56% of jobs in government organizations in Bangladesh is reserved for children of freedom fighters, women, minorities, those having disabilities, and citizens of backward districts. Students demanded this to come down to 10%.
Further they added that quota benefits shouldn't be used more than once.
Reportedly, a gazette on the quota system in government services will be issued after receiving Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s instruction in this regard, Public Administration Ministry’s Senior Secretary Mozammel Haque Khan has said.
“There is nothing to hurry. No recruitment process will begin immediately,” he told reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday.
Asked whether the system would be reformed or repealed, the senior secretary said it would be known later as the decision would be taken following the prime minister’s order.
Replying to another question, Mozammel said they were now waiting for her directive.
“People are coming up with different opinions and speculations and creating confusion. This is not an easy task, rather complicated to some extent. However, everything will be clear after getting the prime minister’s orders.”
Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam said a committee would be formed to scrutinize the quota system.
The next step would be taken according to the recommendations of the committee, he said.
