March 7, 2018: In a recent development, the government of Sri Lanka has blocked popular social media networks in the country amid the going unrest.

As per reports, despite a state of emergency anti-Muslim rioting has flared anew in central Sri Lanka for which in an attempt to stop the spread of religious violence the government has ordered popular social media networks to be blocked across a swathe of central Sri Lanka.
As per sources the networks, including Facebook, Instagram, Viber and WhatsApp, were blocked in the central hills, scene of the violence. Outside of that region, though, many people were also unable to access the social media sites.
It may be stated that the unrest was triggered by the death of a Buddhist truck driver, who was reportedly involved in an incident with four Muslims. Angry mobs made up of the majority Sinhalese, mainly a Buddhist ethnic group attacked dozens of Muslim businesses and houses and at least one mosque leading to the death of one.
As such the government declared a state of emergency in the country on Tuesday.
