March 7, 2018: after the communal clash between Muslim and Buddhist communities intensified in the country, Sri Lanka's government declared a 10-day, nation-wide state of emergency on Tuesday to curb the violence.

The move came after Buddhist mobs swept through the hill town of Kandy on Monday, burning at least 11 Muslim-owned shops and homes. Muslims make up about nine percent of Sri Lanka's population.
As per reports the unrest in the district of Kandy was triggered by the death of a Buddhist truck driver, who was reportedly involved in an incident with four Muslims. Angry mobs made up of the majority Sinhalese, mainly a Buddhist ethnic group attacked dozens of Muslim businesses and houses and at least one mosque.
The violence led to the death of one man. Hundreds of security personnel, including Special Forces, were deployed to Kandy on Monday and a curfew was declared thereafter.
It may be stated that officials feared that the death of a 27-year-old man — who was trapped inside a burning house and who described the attack on the building in an audio recording, which went viral — could provoke violence across the country following which a state of emergency was announced in the country.
Sri Lanka was in a state of emergency for 26 years as the government fought Tamil rebels during the country's civil war, which ended in 2009.
