February 08, 2018: Triggering sensation violent clashes erupted in Bangladesh between police and supporters of Khaleda Zia who hurled bricks on Thursday, ahead of a corruption trial verdict against the ex-prime minister and main opposition BNP chief.

Reportedly, police fired tear gas at thousands of opposition activists who defied heavy security to escort the car taking Zia to a Dhaka court for the verdict. At least five police officers had been injured and two motorcycles torched during the clashes that broke out several kilometers (miles) from the court premises.
It may be stated that Zia is charged with embezzling 21 million takas (USD 252,000) in foreign donations from a trust created for an orphanage and faces life in prison if convicted by the Dhaka magistrates' court. Although she has been consistently denying the charges, insisting "not a penny" was stolen and saying the legal action was politically motivated.

Zia has been sentenced 5 years of jail by the court whereas in the same case, her son Tarique Rahman and four others have been sentenced to 10 years in jail.
Authorities have for days been on high alert for protests in the tense city, where political demonstrations by Zia's centre-right BNP and its Islamist allies in 2014 and 2015 left nearly 200 people dead. Police had banned street protests and rounded up thousands of opposition supporters in a crackdown ahead of Thursday's ruling.
