February 05, 2018: In a recent development, Samsung Group vice chairman Lee Jae-yong, also known as Jay Y. Lee in the West, has been released from prison by a court after a successful appeal as he receives a suspended jail sentence in the second trial on Monday.

His release has come as a huge relief to South Korea’s largest conglomerate.
It may be stated that Lee was in detention since last February and was convicted of corruption charges in August last year following which he was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
Reportedly, in addition to receiving a suspended prison sentence, Lee’s prison term was reduced to two and a half years, although he’s free to go on four years’ probation after being incarcerated for almost a year.
Lee will likely appeal his sentence again and it will take more than six months for the Supreme Court to make a final ruling. But he is expected to return to management immediately to succeed his ailing father, chairman Lee Kun-hee, who has been incapacitated since a heart attack in 2014.
