Fire kills 11 including 3 women at home for elderly people in Japan

 February1, 2018: At least 11 elderly people died including 3 women after a fire broke out at a residence for elderly poor people in northern Japan. Only 5 residents are surviving and they were rescued by police. Three of them are under treatment in a local hospital.

According to the local police, the fire broke out before midnight Wednesday in Sapporo, the main city on the northern main island of Hokkaido.

All 16 people, age between 40s to 80s, were financially poor, and they were residing in the three-story wooden building as shelter for welfare recipients. The building was run by a local company. The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The police are trying to identify the 11 victims. 

According to a local administrator, of the 16 residents, 13 were receiving welfare. Among them, some were suffering from dementia, people with no relatives and some needing assistance in daily life.

Of the 11 victims, seven were found on the first floor and four others were found on the second floor. No one was living on the third floor.
