December 01, 2017: Around 8 people lost their lives and over 80 fishermen have been missing in coastal Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Thursday after cyclone Ockhi hit the regions after a depression above the Bay of Bengal turned into a cyclonic storm.

Reportedly, as stated by meteorologists, the cyclone is heading for Lakshadweep and is unlikely to make landfall in Tamil Nadu or Kerala. As of this morning, the cyclone is hovering 160 km east of Lakshadweep Islandsin the Arabian Sea. Lakshadweep Islands remain on high alert.
Strong winds uprooted more than 500 trees, snapped power lines and damaged settlements close to the sea.
The torrential rain has crippled life in the coastal districts of both the states. Moreover, schools and colleges of the affected regions have been closed as the rain refuses to stop.
It may be mentioned that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has been reviewing the situation in areas affected by the cyclone. NDRF teams have already been moved to the affected areas. More teams are on standby to respond to any further emergencies.
