October 12, 2017: The Allahabad High Court has acquitted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar on Thursday who had been previously held guilty in the double murder of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj.

The Talwars were serving a life sentence for the double murder after being convicted by the special CBI court in 2013, five years after the murders which had taken place in 2008.

Reportedly, they were also convicted of the destruction of evidence with common intent, while Rajesh was additionally convicted of giving a false statement to the police.
A Division Bench, comprising Justices A.K. Mishra and B.K. Narayana, gave the benefit of doubt in favour of the Talwars saying the parents didn't murder their child and further stated that the CBI had failed to prove guilty beyond doubt accepting the argument of counsel for the Talwars that the case against them was based entirely on circumstantial evidence and that they were innocent.
The verdict has given a fresh turn to the case of double murder as a controversial question rises again as to who killed Aarushi and Hemraj.
It may be stated that Aarushi, 14, was found murdered with her throat slit inside her bedroom at her resident in Noida on May 16, 2008. Hemraj who was the initial suspect then, was later recovered dead the next day at the terrace of the house which was found locked from inside.
The Noida Police said that the murders were done with surgical precision and an insider could have been involved as no signs of forced entry were found. Vishnu Sharma, a former domestic help of the Talwars was named as the suspect in the case.
Later, the police began probing the double murder taking the honour killing angle into consideration and arrested Rajesh Talwar, father of Aarushi Talwar, for the double murder.
The case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in June of that year after a lot of criticism for reportedly sloppy investigation came up.
In 2010, the CBI submitted a closure report in the Ghaziabad court but suspected the parents involvement in the murder based on circumstantial evidence.
The court refused the CBI's closure report and accused the parents for murder and destruction of evidence based on the circumstantial evidence furnished in the CBI's report.
The trial against the parents culminated in their conviction by the special CBI court in 2013 and they were sentenced to life.
