India's first solar train under threat : Railways seeks security for fear of being stolen by villagers
Posted on: 08-09-2017 , 11:14:AM | DY365 Bureau

India’s first solar-powered train, which runs from Sarai Rohilla in Delhi to Farukh Nagar in Haryana is under threat.

The train was launched just a month back by railway minister Suresh Prabhu.

The Railways have asked for additional security forces to protect the solar panels which they think might be stolen by the villagers of the villages through which the train passes.

Six coaches out of total 10 are fitted with solar panels on the rooftop to convert solar energy into electrical energy to operate fans and bulbs inside the train.

This one of a kind project will help offset carbon emissions by 9 tonnes per coach per year and also save about 21,000 litres of diesel for a solar-powered DEMU with six trailer coaches, thereby, saving Rs 12 lakh every year.
