21 smartphone makers have been issued notices by the ministry of electronics and IT on suspects of stealing user’s personal info.

Global players like Apple and Samsung, Chinese makers such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Lenovo and Gionee, besides Indian brands such as Micromax is on the list.

Govt. wants to ensure the security of mobile phones sold in India, following reports of data leakage and theft. The phonemakers need to inform about the procedures and processes they follow to ensure data security to the consumers.

This move is mainly done after recent reports of contact lists, text messages being leaked by few smartphone makers.

According to the IT Act, India, a smartphone maker has to make sure that it keeps the data of users safe.

Violations of this act may be punished by unlimited compensation and penalties of Rs 5 crore through state-level arbitrators.

In a high-level meeting, chaired by IT and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad it is asserted that the main concern is that the information is being sent to third-party servers in foreign locations, raising security concerns while violating the privacy of individuals.
