One of the largest Telecom Operator of India, Bharti Airtel claimed that it was incurring a loss of Rs 550 crore per quarter due to large number of incoming calls originating from the Reliance Infocomm Jio network.

Airtel claimed that it is suffering a loss of 21 paise per minute on calls originating from the rival network.

An Airtel official, quoting Jio, said that “India needs competition, not a monopoly in telecom.”

Jio in a presentation before TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has said that Airtel, has made excess of Rs 73,000 crore from Interconnection Usage Charges (IUC).

Telecom operators levy IUC on incoming calls from the network of the other operators. These charges are passed on to subscribers by respective service providers but Jio has appealed to TRAI to end mobile termination charges (MTC), which Airtel claims will create heavy losses for them.

Airtel said in a statement that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) mandated MTC of 14 paise, which is less than the cost of a call per minute, which is currently at 35 paise. Due to the large number of calls originating from Reliance Jio's network, Airtel loses 21 paise for every minute that is carried on its network.
