July 15, 2017: This French Riviera resort marked Bastille Day on Friday with tears rather than fireworks. The usual celebration along the iconic Promenade des Anglais was replaced by a somber ceremony to remember the 86 people mowed down a year ago, when a Muslim terrorist drove a truck through crowds gathered to watch a fireworks display.

Dozens of residents and visitors lined up early Friday morning under the scorching sun on Quai des Etats-Unis, on the eastern end of the boulevard, to place 12,000 blue, white and red plaques on the pavement — each carrying the name of a victim in a heart shape.

Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, 31, a Tunisian-born Nice resident, drove his truck through the crowds, causing hundreds of injuries in addition to the deaths before he was fatally shot. Victims were from Nice as well as a variety of other countries that include Australia, the United States, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia and Madagascar.
