Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday morning inaugurated Kochi's first metro rail service in Kerala.

The PM cut a commemorative ribbon at the Palarivattom station. He then rode a train from there to Pathadippalam. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, urban development secretary Rajiv Gouba and Kerala chief secretary Nalini Netto, among others were also present at the inauguration.

The commercial operations will start from Monday, 6 am onwards.

Kochi will be the first city in the country to have a 'water metro', which will make it India's first integrated multi-model transport system. The new metro will also be India's first to completely use solar panels and plans to meet 25 percent of its electricity needs from solar power.

Also it will be India's first government agency to hire transgender people.

Apart from these unique one of a kind initiatives, the metro network will use compost generated from municipal waste to fertilize the vertical garden which the Metro Network plans to maintain on some of its pillars.
