World Blood Donor Day, June 14: Points to know while donating blood

 June 14, every year is celebrated worldwide as World Blood Donor Day (WBDD).

Started in 2004, this day marks to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.

This year's campaign focuses on blood donation during emergencies and the slogan is "What can you do? Give blood. Give now. Give often".

As the doctors and the American Red Cross believe, a single blood donation can save the lives of up to three people.

Blood donation camps are organized on this day by several voluntary organizations and NGO’s.

Certain safety features are always to be kept in mind, while both donating and even receiving blood. Here are some do’s and don’ts that you should always keep in mind, while participating in blood donation camps.

Are you eligible to donate blood?

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 6 important parameters that determine whether you are eligible to donate blood. These are:

•             The minimum weight of a person must be 50 kgs for an eligible donor and should be between the age group of 18-60 years.

•             The body temperature must be normal with oral temperature not exceeding 37.5 degree Celsius.

•             You should not be suffering from communicable diseases like HIV, Cancer and diabetes or tuberculosis, asthma, rabies, etc.

•             12.5 g/Dl is the minimum prescribed hemoglobin level for donating blood.

•             The person should have a pulse rate within 50 to 100 without irregularities.

•             Eligible donors are ones with a diastolic BP between 50-100 mm Hg, and Systolic BP between  100-180 mm Hg.

Do you know that Blood Donation has many health benefits like Improvement in cardiovascular health, helps in the development of new Red Blood Cells (RBC), People who donate blood at regular intervals are at lesser risks of cancers of lung, liver, colon, throat and stomach.

Donating blood can burn upto 650 calories for each pint that is like 450 ml of blood.

You must drink lots of water before donation and keep in mind to take a well-balanced meal prior and after donating blood. This will keep you healthy and fit and don't forget to have a good night's sleep before donation.  Symptoms like Dizziness, Tingling in the nose and lips and occasional Chills may occur but with a few hours rest and a healthy food habit for the next few hours will make you renewed.
