Zika virus, which causes infection during pregnancy and can also cause birth defects in newborns known as microcephaly — a condition in which babies' head is abnormally small has reached India, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) confirming first three cases in Gujarat's Ahmedabad.

Zica also causes blindness, deafness, and even seizures. Many cases of mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain and fatigue have also been reported with symptoms normally lasting for two to seven days

More than 1.5 million people have been infected by Zica since 2015, mostly in Brazil and other countries in South America but this is the first report in India.

Zica is transmitted through the bite of infected female Aedes mosquitoes, which also spreads dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever.
