A new ransomware named as WannaCry is spreading widely which infected hospitals, telecom agencies and shipping companies around the world, India's cyber security agency, Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) alerted internet users and organisations of taking necessary precautions against the malware.

WannaCry encrypts the files on infected Windows systems, and then asks the user to pay an amount to unlock the files.

The Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) on Saturday, issued Red Alert to fortify security-related defences of the Indian Internet domain to combat hacking and phishing.

The advisory said the ransomware encrypts the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) of a computer before spreading to other systems on the Local Area Network (LAN). The ransomware also spreads through malicious email attachments.

The CERT-In also requests individuals and organisations not to pay the ransom as this does not guarantee files will be released.
