Posted on: 11-04-2009 , 04:: | DY365 Bureau

A summit between China and the Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) was postponed and talks between China, South Korea and Japan cancelled.

Clashes erupted between protesters and government supporters with reports of several people being injured.

It is the first time the protesters were able to interrupt summit business.

Some 2,000 of the red-shirted protesters, who back ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra, arrived in the beach resort on Friday and have been airing their grievances outside the convention hall.

This week also saw huge protests by the anti-government camp in the capital, Bangkok.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has vowed the Asean summit, called to discuss the global financial crisis, will go ahead.

It was due to get into full swing on Saturday before concluding on Sunday with a summit due to include India, Australia and New Zealand
