Gogoi focuses on development plank
Posted on: 29-03-2009 , 04:: | DY365 Bureau

Turning the heat on the BJP for its “politics of hatred and division”, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today asserted that his Government’s priority had all along been on development as visible from the “marked progress” in different spheres. Gogoi, who was addressing the media, said that even the cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh was not the topmost concern and was “one of the problems.”

                  “Providing access to employment, education and health care is our top priorities. For the BJP, however, basic problems of the people are non-issues as the party is preoccupied with the politics of hatred and division,” Gogoi said at a press conference.

                   Referring to the Varun Gandhi case, Gogoi said that the BJP’s endorsement of Varun’s approach made clear the party’s divisive agenda. “We cannot allow such politics in Assam…the BJP cannot compete with us in terms of developmental activities and hence diverting people’s attention to emotive issues,” he added.

            The Chief Minister said that even on the infiltration issue on which the BJP had been so vocal, the party’s insincerity lay exposed from its inaction in checking influx from Bangladesh.

“Today the BJP is saying that infiltration is an external aggression but what had it done to check it when in power? It is me who took a number of initiatives for strengthening border vigilance,” he said, adding that on the updating of the national register of citizens (NRC) also, the Congress deserved credit.

             On the issue of the infamous ‘secret killing’, Gogoi said that those serial murders would not have been possible without the connivance of the Centre and State Government.

   “I have every reason to suspect that the secret killings were done in connivance with the Centre and State Government. It was the Home Ministry’s responsibility to intervene in the matter. Once Prafulla Mahanta, the then Chief Minister, also hinted at this but later retracted his statement,” he said.

Gogoi said that during the BJP-led NDA Government did not come to the rescue of the State Government when it was passing through a financial crisis.
