Posted on: 22-03-2009 , 04:: | DY365 Bureau

Contrary to speculation that candidates would be declared in batches, the ruling party was ahead of the rivals and announced the nominees for all the 42 Lok Sabha and as many as 290 of the total 294 constituencies in the State. Despite her best efforts, Union Minister D Purandeswari could not get Ongole seat and will have to try her luck from Visakhapatnam. However, her husband, Daggubati Venkateswara Rao, has been retained to contest from Parchur Assembly seat.

Another Union Minister Panabaka Lakshmi too could not get Tirupati and has to seek victory from Bapatla segment. But her husband, P Krishnaiah, a senior Railway official, has been given the Assembly ticket from Gudur in their home district, Nellore. Almost all the sitting MPs have been renominated and in the case of those, who were not for any reason, their family member has been considered. Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s brother, Vivekananda Reddy, has opted out from Kadapa where the former’s son, Jaganmohan Reddy, will contest.

Former Union Minister G Venkatswamy’s son, Vivek, has been picked for the Peddapally seat held by him. Venkatswamy’s other son, Minister Vinod, will fight from Chennur Assembly seat.

Among those denied renomination for Assembly election are deputy speaker G Kutuhalamma, Minister Gollapalli Surya Rao, former ministers M Satyanarayana Rao and Mareppa.

The last quit the Cabinet a few months ago following bad performance by the Congress in the local body polls.

Some Congress families managed even three tickets. Minister Botsa Satyanarayana will contest again from Cheepuripalli, his wife, Jhansi, from Bobbili Lok Sabha seat and the minister’s brother Botsa Appala Narsaiah from Gajapathinagaram.

Popular film actress Jayasudha has been favoured with Secunderabad Assembly seat. Of the total Assembly nominees, the bulk have gone to the Chief Minister’s loyalists. Castewise, the forward castes got 141 while BCs secured 66 tickets. Women have been picked for 31 constituencies. Five women also figure in the LS candidates’ list.

The announcement of candidates by the party Central leadership was followed by protests from those denied renomination and aspirants who could not make it. At different places, they staged demonstrations but the Congress leadership is confident of quelling any serious rebel problem
