Sudarshan steps down; Bhagwat new RSS chief
Posted on: 21-03-2009 , 04:: | DY365 Bureau

The change of guard in the Sangh Parivar hierarchy came during the RSS' ongoing three-day Akhil Bhartiya Pratinidhi Sabha, which is in progress at Reshimbagh Smruti Mandir here.

RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav, while talking to the media, said that this time a relatively younger person was chosen as the RSS chief.

On being asked about Bhagwat’s proximity to veteran BJP leader and party’s Prime Ministerial candidate LK Advani, he gave no clear response stating that anybody being close to anyone else was not of any particular concern to the organisation.

Bhaiyyaji Joshi Soni will be the new 'Sar Karyawaha' (general secretary) of the Sangh Parivar fountainhead.

Apparently, health reasons are being seen as the reason behind Sudarshan’s stepping down. However, analysts say that there are deep ideological differences within the RSS and a section of its members feel that there is a need to bring the organisation back to its basic ideology.

Bhagwat, who will soon announce his new team, is considered to be a hardliner and a firm believer in organisational discipline. He had earlier said that there should be no place for those, who break discipline.

The transfer is also being seen as RSS’ attempt at bringing the young brigade at the top level.

At a time when elections are round the corner, the move might be worrying for the Bharatiya Janata Party – in a way the political face of RSS - as in recent times the RSS has accused the party of distancing itself from the Hindutva ideology which put it on the national scene. Bhagwat’s ascent will put pressure on the Saffron party to reverse its diluted stand on Hindutva.

Meanwhile the RSS conclave will chalk out strategy for the upcoming General Elections.

The RSS said that it would support the front where it is respected.

"If you look at the national political fronts, RSS is welcomed in one of them, but we want that every front should do that, where there is respect for Hindutva. RSS has its presence in large numbers where it is respected. We request the people to vote and with what viewpoint they should do this. This will also be discussed," said Manmohan Vaide, publicity head of the RSS.

The meet will discuss and assess the current national scenario and pass resolutions on issues such as the initiatives of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for peace and progress in Kashmir, the situation in Nepal and Naxal violence in the country.

Exceptional relief work undertaken by the RSS and its affiliates in tsunami-affected areas will be reviewed. Besides, future plans for rehabilitation of the victims will also be announced.
