Japanese police say eight foreign skiers and a Japanese guide were rescued after becoming stranded on a snowy mountain overnight.

Police say two groups of skiers became lost at the same point on a ski trail in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island.

The nine skiers spent Tuesday night on the slope and were rescued Wednesday morning, according to a police spokesman.

A search was conducted involving helicopters from the local police force and Japan's military.

Temperatures in the region fell to -4.5 degrees Celcius, with fog and rain in the area, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

According to local media, the stranded skiers and snowboarders were from Australia, the US, England and the Netherlands as well as two New Zealanders.

Hokkaido-area ski and snowboarding website "Powderlife" says all of those stranded on the mountain were residents of Niseko ski village, which is popular with foreigners in Japan.
