Rohmoria now a tale of broken promises, beckons at history
Posted on: 18-03-2009 , 04:: | DY365 Bureau

More than three years have passed by since Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh announced a financial package of Rs 407 crore for anti-erosion works at Rohmoria. The situation, however, has not improved a wee bit.

For the people of Rohmoria, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has flattered to deceive. He had promised a permanent solution to the problem during his visit to erosion-affected Rohmoria on January 17, 2006. He also promised a package of Rs 407 crore for anti-erosion work. However, nothing on these lines has happened thus far. The problem, however, continues, to grow as the Brahmaputra continues to swallow their land and homes. So far, more than 23,000 bighas of land have been lost and nearly 2000 families have been displaced by the erosion. On Tuesday, the Flood Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum criticized the Centre for remaining a mute spectator to the Rohmoria erosion problem.

The erosion at Rohmoria has been going on since the year 1997 and so far the River Brahmaputra has wiped out 38 villages, 6 tea estates, 1 sericulture farm, eight schools and one police station. A PWD road connecting Dibrugarh and Tinsukia has also been swallowed by the river. The erosion at Rohmoria has assumed such alarming proportions that if unchecked the future of vital defence establishments like the Dinjan Army Base, the Air Force Stations at Nudwa and Chabua, the Regional Medical Research Centre, Lahowal as well as the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh is in danger. Even Dibrugarh and Tinsukia town faces possible threat. As part of the Rohmoria protection plan, some protection measures have been taken up but without any success.

Successive governments have tried and failed to solve the Rohmoria erosion problem and only a miracle, it seems, can save Rohmoria from extinction.
