'Kalyan Singh irritant in SP-Congress ties'
Posted on: 15-03-2009 , 04:: | DY365 Bureau

Arjun Singh's comments that Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) rebel Kalyan Singh is the bone of contention between Samajwadi Party and Congress, Amar Singh slammed the minister saying the comments were of no consequence to the party.
Arjun Singh speaking on the SP's alliance with Kalyan Singh, said, "The Congress does support the ties of the SP with Kalyan Singh. Congress has distanced itself from Kalyan Singh's politics. This stand was made clear when Kalyan Singh supported SP. Kalyan had no direct role but he could not stop the demolition."
Amar Singh slamming Arjun Singh for speaking out of turn said, "Old people like Arjun Singh tend to make irritating remarks. Arjun singh is like old person in the family. His comments are of no consequence to me."

Arjun Singh's tatement comes after there has been a political limbo between the two parties over seat-sharing for Lok Sabha elections.
In a stern message to Congress, Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday (February 8) said that it had "no moral right" to comment on the bonhomie between his party and former BJP leader Kalyan Singh as the grand old party was in power at the Centre when Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992.
"I want to advise Congress to keep away from the issue of Kalyan Singh's friendship with SP as it did not have the moral right to do so," Singh told reporters in Lucknow. "From opening up the locks and allowing foundation laying at Babri mosque in Ayodhya, all was done during Congress regimes at the centre. Even in 1992 when the mosque was demolished, it was Congress which was ruling at the Centre," Singh said.

After a seat-sharing formula failed to take off in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party and Congress sought to keep each other in good humour, raising possibilities of a last-minute compromise to unitedly face BSP and BJP. Congress said it would not compromise on its self-respect, and apparently indicated that it expects an honourable deal from the SP as far as seat-sharing is concerned. SP Chief and party's General Secretary Amar Singh said that the party was ready to reconsider its list of already announced candidates for 65 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh if Congress climbs down from its demand as it still wants to forge an alliance with it.
Claiming that the Muslim vote bank of SP was intact, Singh said he had "done a lot for the community and will continue to do so". When the party was slammed for its proximity to Kalyan, Singh termed Khan as an "old associate". On Wednesday (February 4), BJP rebel and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh said that he had owned moral responsibility for the incident in Ayodhya when he had opted to resign from the Chief Minister's post that very day. Kalyan Singh also said that he had joined hands with the Samajwadi Party in a bid to weaken the BJP.
