The NCP has offered to enter into alliance with Congress to break the political deadlock resulting from the loss of majority by the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance Government. Â Addressing a press conference in Shillong on Friday after his return from New Delhi, NCP general secretary Purno A Sangma said there was a possibility of a Congress-NCP-UDP alliance "if the situation demands." This might open up a tussle for the chief ministership battle.
The present ruling alliance has five parties with UDP leading from the front with its Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy. Sangma, who met AICC leaders in Delhi after the political crisis, blamed independent legislators for creating havoc for self interests and said multi-party alliance is the only solution to the crisis.  When asked about the fate of MPA, the former Lok Sabha Speaker made it clear that there would be no coalition minus the two regional parties UDP and HSPDP. He also expressed confidence that MPA would prove its majority on the floor of the House on March 17. Meanwhile, in an interesting development the two independent legislators who had started the episode have been served show cause notice by the Speaker, Bindo M Lanong, as to why they should not be disqualified. The Congress meanwhile is mooting the idea of removing the incumbent Speaker.
