A discovery of a bunch of manuscript throws new light on Assam’s illustrious son Gomdhar Konwar. The manuscript written in 1828 says that in 1827, Gomdhar Konwar raised arms against the British annexation of Assam through the Treat of Yandaboo. Gomdhar Konwar’s achievement was exactly 30-years before Mangal Pandey raised the banner of revolt against the British to ignite the Sepoy Mutiny. Gomdhar’s feat has been engraved in the book of manuscript titled Kumaun Kuwan. The title of the book means everyday, every moment. The book depicts six years of the revolt raised by the Assamese hero but miss out on a couple of facts.
†The book has been written by Gomdhar Konwar’s aide Makham Barua or Apang Phukei. The manuscript was recovered two years back. It includes interest nuggets from the life of Gomdhar Konwar in just 30 pages. However, what is of consideration is that he anticipated Mangal Pandey’s feat by 30 years, but will the Central Government accord him the title of India’s first freedom fighter, or will the Government of Assam do the needful towards this end.
