Congress first list sans women candidate, two hopefuls in Lakhimpur
Posted on: 13-03-2009 , 04:: | DY365 Bureau

All those talks of gender representation that the Congress party claimed would be its policy for the forthcoming general elections has vanished in thin air. When the list of candidates for Assam was announced in New Delhi on Thursday, not a single women candidate was considered fit enough to represent the party.

However, two women candidates in Rani Narah, a former MP and Bobbetta Sarma the APCC spokesperson, are still in fray for the Lakhimpur constituency. But this would not divert the criticism to which the Congress has subjected the AGP-BJP combine in the name of women representation. Very recently, a senior minister of the Gogoi Cabinet had gone on record tom-tomming the Congress’ record in giving candidature to women candidates
