A mobile phone that breathes and has a heart beat is being developed in Germany.Researchers say it's part of a move to make mobiles more life-like.

Building on his experience of creating personalised ring-tones, screen savers and screen backgrounds, Hemmert is now trying to create a living phone.Hammert's work is focused on the interaction between humans and the machines they use.

We call this project a ' living mobile'. The gist is (for the mobile) to send completely normal status signals, like breathing or a pulse. We then investigate what happens when the mobile acts 'alive

It's at an early stage of development, but Hemmert's prototypes are equipped with a mechanism which imitates breathing movements. In other models, the screen and the vibration emulate a beating heart. As a standard, the phones breathe normally and have a regular pulse.

At the moment it is peaceful, but there is a situation where it (the mobile phone) gets excited. To me as a user it would say: 'My mobile needs my attention, perhaps I have missed a call, or there is an SMS or I have an appointment coming.(Tilt down to the hands holding the mobile)

So far no date
