Centre to SC: Google, Yahoo must help in fighting female foeticide
Posted on: 07-10-2015 , 11:14:AM | DY365 Bureau

Oct 7, 2015- The Centre has told the Supreme Court that major web search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing have to play a positive role in implementing India’s law and stop displaying ads for sex determination tests on their websites.

Sex determination test is banned in the country since 1994, after the Pre-Natal Diagnostics Technique (PNDT) Act came into force. A petition filed by Sabu Mathew George claimed that online ads are selling illegal sex-test kit and displaying addresses of foreign clinics that provide assistance in the illegal act.
“Any such intermediary, who fails to expeditiously remove or disable access to any such material, shall be liable under the provisions of the IT Act,” the ministry of communication and information technology said in its affidavit filed before the SC.  In January, the SC had directed Google, Yahoo and Bing to block or filter access to websites and ads on foetal gender determination.
