Joisagar lake in Sivsagar occupies a special place in the history and psyche of Assam. Recognised as the largest artificial lake in Asia, it is now in pitiful condition due to lack of conservation.
Built on the orders of the Ahom king Rudra Singha to commemorate his mother Sati Joimoti’s great sacrifice, Joisagar lake occupies an area of more than 210 puras. Many renowned temples are also situated along its banks. Yet, it is crying for attention.
This lake was built by Rudra Singha in the memory of his mether Sati Joymati. The interest aspect is that it was built in 45 days. Now the lake is gradually choked with aquatic weeds, even as its banks are collapsing.
Once the lake and its surroundings used to resound with the cries of migratory birds. But this is not the case any more.
Migratory birds used to come here from Siberia and China. But because of the short-sighted policies of the State Tourism Department, the introduction of machine boats for tourists has begun to frighten off migratory birds.
Conservationists and nature lover are calling for an integrated policy, whereby Joisagar Lake can be developed as a tourism spot while keeping its once pristine environment intact.
