Social network scammers are on the prowl in the social networking sites like Face book and Twitter. Anyone can fall prey since lack of security is a big factor when it comes to these social networking sites. Assam is once again grabbing headlines and off course for wrong reasons. After photographs of an Asaamese actor and musician surfaced on Face book now flesh trade is thriving in the state through these sites with woman making indecent proposals and quoting a price for one night stands. And many influential people are among the adds when it comes to such profiles. But will a woman be so gutsy to put up such proposals through such networking sites.
Within the past one week two instances of cyber crime has created ripples amongst the people of Assam. Both the crimes were committed through the hugely popular social networking website Facebook. One, involving compromising photographs of an Assamese actor and a popular musician was first brought to light by DY365. After the broadcast the actor registered a complaint in the Jalukbari PS and contacted the CID regarding it. Then came the news of advertisement of flesh trade in the same website. What is interesting that immediately after the news broadcast both the accounts were deleted? Many had even posted comments on the photographs of the actor and the musician.
But why are these social networking sites used as a medium for such activities and what does this signify in psychological terms.
And to know the answers of several these type of questions above police investigation will be crucial. But is the police in Assam capable or even interested in putting a lid on cyber crime? That’s a million dollar question now.
